The franchise for the Holiday Inn at the Amana exit on I-80 has been changed to the Clarion Inn (part of the Choice Hotels chain).  Other than the name, nothing else has changed at this time (same phone number, same rates).

How About a River Trip This Summer?

Looking for something different to do during the Marengo celebration?  Why not take a cruise down the Iowa River?

The Class of '62 is exploring interest in a canoe trip from Koszta to Marengo on Sunday morning, July 5.  The idea came up as a substitute (?) for a class gift to newlyweds Diane Dale Engle and Pete Cullum (the original idea was a European river cruise!)  The couple seems willing, if there is enough interest from their classmates and anyone else who'd like to join in the fun.

The 12-mile trip can be done in about 3 1/2 hours -- but figure more realistically on 4 -5 hours, taking into account sandbar stops, rescues, and other diversions.  The planned timeframe is from mid-morning to mid-afternoon on Sunday.

Organizer Bob Hibbs says, "
This will not be a low budget affair.  It will be a NO budget affair.  FOC (Friends of Cullums) will try to find canoes for anyone who wants to go, but we will need to know who might be interested."

If you're interested or want more info, contact Bob Hibbs at bhibbs@adiis.net; 641.752.7516; or cell 641.691.9525.

Yo Ho Ho!

5/25/08 --

Joint celebration held May 25 for Koenig and great-granddaughter

May 25, 2008, Mildred Koenig's great-granddaughter Lindsey Cooling, Atlanta GA, was baptized by the Rev. Katie Dawson in First United Methodist Church, Marengo.  Koenig knew she was attending a celebration dinner in honor of Lindsey at the American Legion Hall following the baptism, but she didn't know this was also a surprise party for her 85th birthday, which was July 6.

The family also celebrated three of Mildred's grandchildren's college graduations:  Kristi Freeze Haupert with a graduate degree from Drake University; Vicki Freeze Zittergruen with a bachelor's from Mt. Mercy; and Alex Koenig from Kirkwood.  Included in the celebration were son-in-law Jim Freeze for his 65th birthday, and Lindsey for her first birthday.

The Legion Auxiliary ladies prepared the mid-day meal and supper for the gathering of extended family.

Attending besides Lindsey were her parents, Joe and Lisa Wandling Cooling, Atlanta, and grandparents Larry and Vivian Koenig Wandling; Lindsey's paternal grandmother, Katee Cooling, Shalimar FL; Lindsey's aunt, uncle, and cousins, Bryan and Laurie Wandling Livengood, Josh and Kyle, Lexington, KY.  Local relatives attending besides Mildred were son Allen Koenig, wife Julie, Alex and Kelsey, and daughter Marilyn Koenig Freeze and husband, Jim, Cedar Rapids.

Children and grandchildren of Marilyn and Jim Freeze attending were Jeff and Julie Freeze and children Sarah, Andrew, Emilie, and Amanda; Matt and Vicki Zittergruen and children Marshall, Trevor, and Ali, all of Cedar Rapids; and Henry and Kristi Haupert and children Aaron, Abbie, Callie, and Marcus, Collins.

Visiting in the afternoon were Mildred's siblings, Mary Volz, Norway; Everett Kahler and family, Cedar Rapids; Ivan Kahler, Parnell; and Don Kahler, Oceanside, CA; brother-in-law Rudolph Koenig and wife Verna, niece LaVonne Hawkins, Brooklyn, and other family members.

The baptism of Lindsey in this church is a special family tradition.  This is the church Lindsey's grandparents, Larry and Vivian Koenig Wandling, grew up in, and where they were married.  Lindsey's cousins Josh and Kyle Livengood were baptized here in 2003 and 2005.  Great-grandparents, the late Clarence and Carrie Wandling, were long-time active members of the church.  In fact, Larry told how his father, Clarence Wandling, as a child, had held the Bible when the church was first dedicated.
